"Reading Roman Roads"
Roads are one of the most enduring features of Rome's legacy. This paper examines the representation of roads and surveying across a wide range of Roman literary and technical texts. Reading the representations of surveying, roads and travel in in Plautus' comedies, Catullus' lyrics, Virgil's epic, Vitruvius' On Architecture, and the writings of the Land Surveyors (Agrimensores), permits a newly detailed appreciation of the Roman experiences of empire.
