Frank T. Coulson
Department of Classics
Researching the manuscript holdings of libraries in North America and Europe can pose great difficulties for the graduate student new to manuscript studies. How does one track down the copies of one's text? What is the best way to approach and gain access to collections which are often carefully guarded? What is the best way of working with a manuscript in situ (sometimes in difficult circumstances)? How best to catalogue the fruits of one's labors? In this talk, Professor Coulson will attempt to answer some of these very real obstacles to manuscript research. For some thirty years, starting in the dark, pre-web era, he has gained access to many of the important manuscript collections in Europe while working on his long anticipated catalogue of medieval Latin commentaries on the Metamorphoses. His talk is aimed at the neophyte scholar of manuscripts and assumes no prior knowledge. All graduate students, undergraduate students, or the interested member of the public, are welcome to attend.
