"Orpheus, Orphism and Orphic-Bacchic Mysteries"

In my lecture I will first briefly look at Orpheus, then study Orphism, in particular its place in fifth-century Athens, and I will conclude with an exploration of the origin, development and social location of the Orphic-Bacchic Mysteries.

 

 

Jan N. Bremmer is Professor Emeritus for the History of Religion at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. This Academic year, he is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University.
