“Proponents of the field of ‘narrative medicine’ believe the humanities can prepare patients and physicians to deal with illness.” Ira Flatow, “Science Friday,” National Public Radio
Find out why medical students and practitioners are turning to the humanities (especially narrative studies of literature, film, and comix), and why scholars in the humanities are fascinated by the stories of patients, doctors, and other health care practitioners. This series of screenings and events illuminates an exciting new movement called “narrative medicine” based on the premise that narrative competence enhances medical competence even as medical experiences often reshape narrative forms.
The film and comix series includes the screening of several film classics focusing on the experience of illness, including Dark Victory (Edmund Goulding, 1939), The Snake Pit (Anatole Litvak, 1948), Murmur of the Heart (Louis Malle, 1971), Safe (Todd Haynes, 1995) and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Julian Schnabel, 2007). Three other films in the series, Fast Trip, Long Drop(Gregg Bordowitz, 1994), Habit (Gregg Bordowitz, 2002) and the recent The Waiting Room (Peter Nicks, 2012), will be introduced by the directors. The series also includes a live, interactive version of the new digital comic Upgrade Soul with live musical accompaniment and a conversation with David Small, author of the award winning graphic novel Stitches (2009).
The two-day multidisciplinary conference, with speakers from the US, the UK and Canada, promises to help shape the future course of the still-emerging field of narrative medicine. Plenary presentations will be given by leaders in the field, Rita Charon, Arthur Frank, and Elizabeth Leake. The conference will feature panels on graphic narratives, ancient medicine, disability and trauma narratives and an innovative longitudinal elective in narrative medicine at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.
