From Department Chair, Mark Fullerton:
It’s hard to believe that I am beginning my third year as Chair of the Classics department. So much has happened since I began as interim in 2022. We have, with Ben Folit-Weinberg joining us last Autumn, welcomed five new tenured or tenure-track faculty since my arrival, bringing many new ideas and opportunities to the Department. The timing was fortuitous, because this past year we underwent an Academic Unit Review conducted by an external team of eminent Classics scholars and teachers. This allowed, indeed required, a careful process of self-examination and evaluation involving our now expanded faculty. In addition, we have input from the external team to consider and incorporate moving forward. The process culminates in an action plan to be presented to and discussed with the Provost’s office this Autumn. We are already moving forward, moreover, in preparing our search for another new faculty member, in ancient religion/REG, to be conducted in the upcoming academic year. Just as important, we have again this year added five new graduate students, arriving just this week, reflecting our ongoing commitment to support and expand our program of graduate studies.
As you will see from the newsletter, the Department and its members have continued to be very active in individual and collaborative research and publications, as well as in curriculum development and community outreach. I would add my personal congratulations to them for their accomplishments. I would also like to reach out to you, alumni, and friends of the Department, and welcome them to contact me directly with questions or to provide updates on your own activities as well. Also, this is our first newsletter for quite some time, and I hope you enjoy catching up with us. It is our intention to continue to publish these with some regularity, so please keep us informed of your whereabouts by sending contact information to our Department Manager Khalid Jama (jama.10@osu.edu).
