We spent a week this summer at a seminar in Germany on computational humanities, where were we able to make dramatic advances on a project we call the “Herodotos Project” — devising a web-based portal/database on ancient ethnohistory — advances that were made possible by expertise we encountered there in computational linguistics as applied to humanistic issues. Knowing very little about the computational side of things, we came away with an appreciation for how computer science and the humanities can successfully interact. In this presentation, we will introduce our project, share our experiences with the group concerning its computational dimension(s), and seek further advice from the group about next steps that might be taken.
