Title: Some Considerations on the Recent Epigraphic Discoveries in Alabanda
Alabanda is an ancient city located approximately 7 km west of the Çine District of Aydın Province in Turkey. It is situated to the west of the Marsyas (Çine) Stream and is regarded as one of the most important cities of Inner Caria according to Strabo. Recent excavations conducted by a team from Atatürk University in Erzurum have unearthed highly intriguing new epigraphic documents.
This presentation will first provide a brief overview of these finds and then focus on two specific groups of inscriptions. The initial part will discuss a series of name lists carved on various blocks from the Hellenistic Period down to the Roman Imperial Period, examining their nature and significance. The second part will introduce an honorary inscription of a victorious athlete, dated to the latter half of the 2nd century AD. This inscription enumerates his achievements and contributions as a benefactor to his homeland, Alabanda.
These findings offer valuable insights into the city's historical context, revealing previously unknown details that contribute significantly to our understanding of Alabanda's past.
