Mycenaean Greek

Greek 7891/Linguistics 7890.10

In Spring semester 2018, Fritz Graf of Classics and Brian Joseph of Linguistics will offer a one-credit seminar on Mycenaean Greek (Linear B).  Attendees will meet every other week, starting on January 10 and every two weeks thereafter (January 24, February 7, etc.) from 4:00 - 5:30.

The course will cover the following topics: the decipherment of Linear B; Greek dialectology; the place of Mycenaean Greek within Greek dialects; and Mycenaean culture, religion, and economy.  Also, the class will read a significant number of Mycenaean texts, and work on the careful interpretation of these texts, within both their linguistic context and their historical setting.
