Rachael Knodel

What is your area of study?

Greek literature, myth, and religion, particularly focusing on the Underworld

What is your hometown?

North Royalton, Ohio

Why did you choose to study Classics?

I've loved mythology for as long as I can remember and I always wanted to be able to work with it as a career. I started out thinking I wanted to be an archaeologist, but once I started learning Greek and Latin, I found myself falling in love with the stories all over again.

What do you like most about the Department of Classics?

The graduate students have such a lovely bond and there is so much support there. My fellow grad students have been integral to my success in this department.

What are your plans after completing your PhD program?

I hope to get a tenure-track position at a liberal arts college and continue teaching.

What advice would you give to students considering pursuing graduate coursework in Classics?

You have to know it's going to be a lot of work and it's exhausting at times, but if you truly love it, it makes all the difference.
